God is good forever! He never changes forever! This is His character. But He definitely is also the enemy of the evil men and the devil. And no change in that too. We are also called to taste how good He is for us in our daily lives (Psalm 34:8). God never changes His character, yet, it is we who miss our chances to taste His goodness.
Here the Psalmist Asaph places a 'condition' to feel this character of our God. 'Clean heart' - we are really blessed if we possess this heart. How to get this clean heart? What would be our state after receiving this heart?
'Create in me a clean heart, O God;...' cries the Psalmist in Psalms 51:10. Our God alone is the creator. He is all powerful to create everything out of nothing. Defiling characters of evil proceeds from the heart of the man says Jesus in Matthew 15:18-20 and Mark 7:20-23. But if we give our sin-filled hearts to our God (1 John 1:9) He is mighty enough to change that into a new heart, a new creation. Old things pass away when we are changed into a new creation (2 Cor 5:17).
After receiving a new heart we should never desire to return to our old life. It would be like a dog returning to its own vomit (Pro 26:11, 2 Pet 2:22). Instead, "Flee also youthful lusts: but follow (pursue) righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart." advises St.Paul in 2 Timothy 2:22. We can fulfil the eternal purpose of God in our lives only when we quit those things that has to be left and join with those in the race who are made as new creation. Then His righteousness, faith love and peace will abound in all our boundaries.
When our deceitful heart is made new the old things just passes off (2 Cor 5:17). When at times our old characters raise its head in our new way of life, we must "...put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;" (Eph 4:22) and "...have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:" (Colo 3:9-10). Thus we who have put on the new man "Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:" (1 Pet 1:22). When we lay off our old self and put on the new man we can show the genuine love as our new character like how Christ has shown us.
So when we are made new creation, and when we start to run the new race, when we receive and grow in the new character, we will be able to taste how good is our God for us. We will be able to grow up trusting Him and live a blessed life.
God of heaven will bless us!
"Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:12
